Adoration: A Natural History, a wildlife docudrama by Ian Woodward, FZS, is a portrait of the English countryside seen through the seasons, its fauna and flora and waterways, and through the eyes of Nature Woman.
It is accompanied by the filmmaker’s screenplay in verse.
Nature Woman, played by London-based Dutch actress Kim May, is the physical embodiment of the film’s imagery and sentiments.
KIM MAY – Nature Woman
Kim May spent most of her life in Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe and one of the busiest ports in the world, before moving to London. From Rotterdam’s world-famous Codarts, University for the Arts, she holds a BA degree in Music and is a graduate of London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts – one of the UK’s leading drama schools – with an MA in Performance Musical Theatre.
She has appeared in several short films, including Fallen Stars and The First Signs of Love, and played the part of Kate in the pilot for a television series called Charlie in the Wild. In the theatre she has starred as Kate/Lois Lane in Cole Porter’s classic musical Kiss Me Kate and as the fading Hollywood star Jessica Cranshaw in the Kander and Ebb musical Curtains.
At the end of 2014 the horseback-riding actress embarked on a three-month national tour of The Wizard of Oz, taking on the iconic role of Kansas farm-girl Dorothy made famous by Judy Garland in the 1939 Hollywood classic with the hit song Over the Rainbow.
“I have a great love of animals, nature and science,” says Kim May, “and so I was naturally drawn to the role of Nature Woman in Adoration. She has some beautiful lines, such as –
Life is a stream
On which we strew
Petal by petal the flower of our heart,
The end lost in dream.
The London-based Dutch rising star has many strings to her bow. Although the actress-singer is best known for her roles in stage musicals and in several acclaimed short films, she is also a gifted and prolific songwriter with many recordings to her name.
Encore Films was thrilled when Kim May agreed to write the theme song for Adoration: A Natural History in collaboration with her long-time creative associate Victor Summers. Called simply Adoration, and sung by Kim herself – of course! – it appears over the film’s opening title credits.
Summers & May produced and recorded the theme song in London and Kim’s Rotterdam home town. Here the duo also wrote, produced and recorded the film’s instrumental end-credits music.
