A Natural History
Adoration: A Natural History, a semi-dramatised natural-history film by Ian Woodward, FZS, goes into production in late August. The film is a lyrical portrait of the English landscape as seen through the prism of its fauna and flora and the seasons that shape the countryside and through the eyes and poetic imagination of Nature Woman.
It is accompanied by gorgeous music and specially-written verse by the filmmaker, a lifelong naturalist and committed Fellow of the Zoological Society of London. Nature Woman, played by London-based Dutch rising star Kim May, is the physical embodiment of the film’s imagery, its music and, especially, its words.
Kim May spent most of her life in Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe and one of the busiest ports in the world, before moving to London. From Rotterdam’s world-famous Codarts, University for the Arts, she holds a BA degree in Music and is a graduate of London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts – one of the UK’s leading drama schools – with an MA in Performance Musical Theatre.
She has appeared in several short films, including Fallen Stars and The First Signs of Love, and played the part of Kate in the pilot for a television series called Charlie in the Wild. In the theatre she has starred as Kate/Lois Lane in Cole Porter’s classic musical Kiss Me Kate and as the fading Hollywood star Jessica Cranshaw in the Kander and Ebb musical Curtains.
At the end of the year the horseback-riding actress embarks on a national tour of The Wizard of Oz, taking on the iconic role of Kansas farm-girl Dorothy made famous by Judy Garland in the 1939 Hollywood classic with the hit song Over the Rainbow.
“I have a great love of animals, nature and science,” says Kim May, “and so I was naturally drawn to the role of Nature Woman in Adoration. She has some beautiful lines, such as –
Life is a stream
On which we strew
Petal by petal the flower of our heart,
The end lost in dream.
“It’s going to involve lots of filming in lovely settings, hopefully under blue skies. I’ve got the suntan lotion ready!”
